National Assembly Promotes AI-Based Real-Time Captioning Service

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The National Assembly is launching real-time captioning services based on artificial intelligence (AI).

On the 21st, Lee Chun-seok, Secretary General of the National Assembly, announced while signing a business agreement between the National Assembly Secretariat and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), "Based on cooperation with ETRI, we will innovatively improve the efficiency of legislative activities and create an 'intelligent National Assembly' where the working National Assembly can be vividly delivered to the public's fingertips."

The two organizations will collaborate to provide the world's first "AI voice recognition-based real-time captioning service for National Assembly standing committee meetings." They will also cooperate to implement intelligent services supporting legislative activities and internal staff work, and to introduce intelligent information technology for effectively providing legislative information to the public and facilitating communication.

The real-time captioning system will be pilot implemented this year in the Health and Welfare Committee and the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, with plans to gradually expand next year. Previously, only major meetings were provided through shorthand or post-event transcripts based on live broadcasts, making it difficult for the hearing impaired and others to experience the vivid scenes of legislative activities.
