[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A complaint has been filed with the police alleging that a creditor appeared at a daughter's wedding venue and forcibly took the congratulatory money.
According to the police on the 21st, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul is investigating a case in which debtor A filed a complaint last February against creditor B and others for charges including joint extortion, joint coercion, and violation of the Act on the Fair Collection of Debts.
In the complaint, A's side claimed that B and others visited the wedding venue of A's daughter held at a hotel in Songpa-gu, Seoul, last February and forcibly took the congratulatory money under the pretext of debt repayment, threatening to cause a disturbance at the venue if the money was not given. While A's side admitted to being unable to repay the debt, they filed the complaint stating that forcibly taking the congratulatory money or making threats was wrong.
A reportedly borrowed money from B several times and was unable to repay part of it, leading to a fraud charge under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes in January last year, and was sentenced to imprisonment in the first trial in April.
A police official said, "The positions of both sides are conflicting," and added, "We are verifying the facts by summoning and investigating the parties involved in the case."
