[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will operate a special ‘AI Literacy Program’ for elementary, middle, and high schools in the district on July 2.

This year, the district has prepared a ‘Seongdong Future School Special Education’ program themed on AI (Artificial Intelligence) for local elementary, middle, and high schools in two sessions. In July, Professor Jeong Jae-seung, a brain engineering professor at KAIST, will give a special lecture titled ‘AI Era, Turning Imagination into Reality.’

The program is designed to enhance understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and help youth grow into outstanding talents in the AI era. It includes online lectures and hands-on experience through a digital game platform (AI World). After the lecture, there will be a Q&A session via chat, and pre- and post-participation diagnostic tests will be conducted to specifically assess changes in students’ future competencies.

The first session held in April featured a special lecture by world-renowned roboticist Dr. Dennis Hong, with a total of 2,000 students participating. This program has already received high enthusiasm, with over 2,200 students from nine schools expressing their intention to participate.

The Experience Center offers various online courses to learn about Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, including the ‘Seongdong Future School 4.0’ program, where students, teachers, and parents participate together. The district official explained that through efficient and focused school-level implementation, the center continuously fosters future competencies and leads Fourth Industrial Revolution education, generating high responsiveness.

The district opened the ‘Seongdong Fourth Industrial Revolution Experience Center’ in October 2017, the first of its kind nationwide, with a major policy focus on nurturing future talents equipped with critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills for integrated problem-solving, proactively preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

Especially last year, due to strengthened COVID-19 social distancing measures, the center operated online and small-group experience-centered programs, receiving high acclaim from a total of 970 participants. The distinctiveness and professionalism of the curriculum were recognized, and the center was selected for two consecutive years as a Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education designated startup experience center hub institution in the Seoul area.

The program will be conducted online in real time on the day, and students can participate via ZOOM or YouTube during class hours depending on their school’s circumstances.

Applications can be submitted until the end of this month, and detailed information is available on the Seongdong Fourth Industrial Revolution Experience Center website.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The Seongdong Fourth Industrial Revolution Experience Center plays a pivotal role in nurturing future talents with creativity, convergence, and communication skills,” adding, “We will focus even more on cultivating future talents in step with rapidly changing future technologies.”
