Assemblyman Yongbin Lee "Resolving Parking Shortages... Also Expected to Serve as a Landmark"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Rep. Lee Yong-bin (Democratic Party of Korea, Gwangju Gwangsan Gap) announced on the 20th that construction will officially begin on the 21st with a groundbreaking ceremony for the parking building to resolve the parking issues at Gwangju Songjeong Station.
Until now, Gwangju Songjeong Station has faced urgent needs to secure parking spaces due to a surge in users, causing increased inconvenience from parking shortages and traffic congestion around Songjeong Station.
After Rep. Lee secured a budget of 31.8 billion KRW last year for the Gwangju Songjeong Station parking building, construction has been actively promoted this year with the goal of completion in October 2022.
The Songjeong Station parking building will be constructed with seven floors above ground, and upon completion, the parking lot will expand from the existing 608 spaces to 1,580 spaces (including 48 for the disabled), which is 2.6 times larger.
During the construction period of the parking building, the city of Gwangju, Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), Gwangsan District Office, and the Police Agency are cooperating to implement special traffic measures by operating 717 parking spaces across six temporary parking lots around Songjeong Station to alleviate parking inconveniences for users.
Rep. Lee stated, “Gwangju Songjeong Station is the gateway to Honam and a strategic point in Gwangsan, the future growth axis of Gwangju, holding geographical symbolism; however, the station building and parking spaces have been insufficient relative to the scale of use.” He added, “I warmly welcome the start of the station expansion and parking lot construction so that Gwangju Songjeong Station, which embodies the city’s future value, can serve as a landmark that Gwangju citizens take pride in.”
He continued, “Once the Songjeong Station parking building is completed, the parking problems at Songjeong Station and the surrounding road traffic congestion issues will be greatly alleviated. Although inconveniences for users during the construction period are inevitable, we will work with local governments and related agencies to minimize user inconvenience through continuous monitoring.”
