[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, has decided to suspend in-person classes at all levels of schools again just two weeks after resuming them.
On the 19th, Mexico City’s education authorities announced that from the 21st (local time), in-person activities at public and private elementary, middle, and high schools will be halted.
This measure follows the change in Mexico City’s COVID-19 risk level indicator from 'green' to 'yellow.'
Mexico City, a metropolis with a population of 9 million, had not held in-person classes for over a year since the arrival of COVID-19 last year. However, as the spread recently slowed, the city switched to a 'green' signal on the 7th and reopened schools for the first time.
But after a slight increase in confirmed cases and hospital bed occupancy, in-person attendance was suspended again. During the two weeks after reopening, a total of 8 confirmed cases were reported in Mexico City schools.
So far, Mexico has recorded approximately 2.47 million cumulative COVID-19 cases and about 231,000 deaths.
