Kang Han-seung, Coupang CEO Statement: "Plan to Provide Lifetime Support for Bereaved Families"
"Will Establish 'Kim Dong-sik Fire Captain Scholarship Fund' for Children of Fallen Firefighters"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Coupang announced that it will cooperate in the investigation of the cause of the fire accident at the Deokpyeong Logistics Center and conduct special inspections at all business sites. It also stated that it will prepare support measures for the bereaved family of the late Rescue Captain Kim Dong-sik, who died in the line of duty during fire suppression, as well as a scholarship fund.
Kang Han-seung, CEO of Coupang, released a statement on the 20th, saying, "We will continue to invest and make efforts to create a safe workplace," and added, "We will actively cooperate in the investigation of the fire cause and, based on the investigation results, actively improve any additional necessary areas."
He also said, "To prevent fires, we will conduct special inspections targeting all Coupang logistics centers and business sites to find ways to improve."
Coupang also expressed its intention to pay regular salaries to employees who lost their workplaces due to the fire. CEO Kang said, "We will do our best to ensure that employees do not face difficulties in their livelihoods," and added, "We will pay regular salaries to 1,700 full-time employees even during the period when they cannot work."
Coupang expressed condolences for Rescue Captain Kim Dong-sik of the Gwangju Fire Station, who lost his life during the fire suppression process, stating, "We will consult with the bereaved family to prepare specific measures to support them for life so that they do not face any difficulties."
It continued, "We will also prepare all support measures to ensure the speedy recovery of firefighters who were injured and are undergoing treatment," and added, "To honor the noble spirit of the deceased, we will consult with the bereaved family to establish the 'Kim Dong-sik Fire Captain Scholarship Fund' for the children of firefighters who died in the line of duty."
Meanwhile, Coupang also conveyed that it has been making efforts to build a safe workplace. It stated that it has hired an additional 700 safety experts over the past year and invested more than 250 billion KRW in safety management.
It added, "In the case of the Deokpyeong Logistics Center, a detailed inspection for the first half of the year was completed over four months starting from February by commissioning a professional fire safety company," and said, "All additional improvements necessary for fire safety had been implemented."
