CJ Logistics has consecutively opened fulfillment centers in Gunpo (room temperature) and Yongin (cold storage), providing customized logistics services according to product storage temperatures. By linking with the nearby delivery center Gonjiam Mega Hub, they extended the order cutoff time to maximize consumer convenience. [Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] CJ Logistics announced on the 20th that it will operate a fulfillment (e-fulfillment) center in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, in collaboration with Naver, which performs the entire logistics process for room temperature products ordered through e-commerce. In August, it plans to open a cold chain fulfillment (c-fulfillment) center specialized in refrigerated and frozen products in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
The biggest feature of the Gunpo and Yongin fulfillment centers is that they maximize consumer convenience by extending the order cutoff time through linkage with nearby courier hub terminals. For regular courier services, orders close at 3 PM considering packaging and collection times. In contrast, for fulfillment centers, once the shipping process is completed, products are sent directly to the Gonjiam Mega Hub, located one hour away, without waiting for couriers or sending to sub-terminals.
As the waiting and transit times for products are reduced, consumers can receive items ordered by midnight the next day. The Gonjiam Mega Hub is Asia’s largest logistics terminal and serves as a hub for distributing products nationwide.
The Gunpo e-fulfillment center has a total floor area of 38,400㎡ (11,616 pyeong), equivalent to five soccer fields (7,140㎡ each). It handles the entire logistics process including storage, inventory management, packaging, and shipping for room temperature product sellers. The facility consists of five floors, where products are stored according to their attributes and shipping frequency from floors 1 to 5. Using advanced technologies such as MPS, eFLEXs, and W-Navigator, sorting and packaging are performed, and integrated shipping is done on the first floor. Autonomous transport robots will be introduced in the future.
MPS is a system that automatically guides workers on the types and quantities of products needed during inbound and outbound operations, eFLEXs is an integrated logistics management system dedicated to e-commerce clients, and W-Navigator is a mobile picking system that visually provides product locations and work information.
CJ Logistics, together with Naver, has introduced an ‘Eco-friendly Smart Packaging Solution’ at the Gunpo center to implement environmentally friendly logistics processes. Developed by the company’s TES Logistics Technology Research Institute, this technology automatically recommends and manufactures optimal boxes based on the size and bundling units of ordered products, measures empty space inside the box, and automatically inserts cushioning materials to prevent excessive packaging. Additionally, all packaging materials such as cushioning, pads, and tape have been replaced with recyclable paper materials.
The Yongin center, with a total floor area of 19,174㎡ (approximately 5,800 pyeong), provides logistics services for refrigerated and frozen products. Through the IoT-based Cool Guardian System, temperature and humidity throughout the logistics center are monitored in real time, and cold chain specialists perform integrated logistics processes including inventory management, packaging, and inspection according to product storage temperatures.
The biggest feature of the Gunpo and Yongin fulfillment centers is the extension of order cutoff times through linkage with nearby courier hub terminals. For regular courier services, orders close at 3 PM considering packaging and collection times. In contrast, the Gunpo and Yongin fulfillment centers send products directly to the Gonjiam Mega Hub, located one hour away, immediately after shipping operations are completed without waiting for couriers or sending to sub-terminals. Reduced product waiting and transit times allow consumers to receive items ordered by midnight the next day.
As the order cutoff time is extended, it is expected that not only consumer convenience but also sellers’ sales will increase. According to a survey of sellers using the CJ Logistics Gonjiam fulfillment center, 77% of companies reported a sales increase of more than 25% after the service launch. CJ Logistics plans to recruit more fulfillment service clients going forward.
A CJ Logistics official said, “As logistics competitiveness becomes a core corporate strength, demand for fulfillment services is rapidly increasing, and we are providing various platforms accordingly. We will gradually expand fulfillment services and continue to develop customized services so that manufacturers, small and medium-sized merchants, and consumers can all benefit in line with distribution trends.”
