[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, expressed his principled support for the 'Anti-Discrimination Act' being promoted primarily by the Justice Party. However, he added that the contentious issues should be sufficiently resolved through social discussions.
On the 19th, through a statement titled 'Position on the Anti-Discrimination Act,' Governor Lee said, "I am in principle supportive of the Anti-Discrimination Act," and added, "I already expressed this position during the 2017 Democratic Party presidential primary."
He also stated, "I believe that the highly debated parts can reach social consensus through dispelling misunderstandings, thorough discussions, consultations, and adjustments."
Earlier, on the 15th, after attending the '6.15 Commemoration Democratic Peace Plaza Korean Peninsula Peace Headquarters Special Forum' held at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall Convention Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, he was asked by reporters about the Justice Party's push for the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Act. He avoided a direct answer by saying, "I have thoughts on the Anti-Discrimination Act, but I will consider responding after former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol answers first."
The Anti-Discrimination Act contains provisions that no condition such as gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation can justify discrimination. Currently, a National Assembly petition demanding the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Act has surpassed 100,000 signatures.
