[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] As the speed of COVID-19 vaccination accelerates in South Korea, the number of reported adverse reactions after vaccination is steadily increasing. Although 29 additional death reports have been made, it has not been confirmed whether these deaths are related to the vaccine.

According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (Promotion Team) on the 19th, a total of 10,230 new cases of suspected adverse reactions were reported to health authorities after vaccination between the 16th and 18th (AstraZeneca 7,530 cases, Janssen 1,623 cases, Pfizer 177 cases).

By date, there were 2,848 cases on the 16th, 3,552 cases on the 17th, and 3,830 cases on the 18th. With 1,855,049 vaccinations administered over the past three days, the surge in adverse reaction reports is presumed to be linked to the increased number of vaccinations.

Among these, 29 additional death reports were made. Of these, 15 had received the AstraZeneca vaccine and 14 the Pfizer vaccine, but causality between the deaths and the vaccines has not been confirmed. Reports of suspected anaphylaxis, a severe systemic allergic reaction, increased by 52 cases. Among these, 23 were related to AstraZeneca, 15 to Janssen, and 14 to Pfizer vaccines.

Major adverse reaction cases, which include 'special interest adverse reactions,' intensive care unit admissions, life-threatening conditions, permanent disabilities, and sequelae, totaled 459 new reports (AstraZeneca 331 cases, Pfizer 76 cases, Janssen 52 cases). The remaining 9,690 cases were general adverse reactions such as pain and swelling at the injection site, fever, and headache.

Since vaccinations began in South Korea on February 26, the cumulative number of suspected adverse reaction reports has reached 64,003. This accounts for approximately 0.36% of the total 1st and 2nd dose cumulative vaccinations (17,682,685 doses) as of midnight on the same day. By vaccine type, there were 48,808 cases for AstraZeneca, 11,957 for Pfizer, and 3,238 for Janssen.

The cumulative number of death reports after vaccination is 290. Among these, 173 were Pfizer vaccine recipients, 116 AstraZeneca recipients, and 1 Janssen recipient. Including cases where symptoms were first reported and later worsened leading to death, the total number of deaths is 388.

Suspected anaphylaxis cases total 395 (AstraZeneca 259, Pfizer 91, Janssen 45), and suspected major adverse reaction reports total 2,557 (AstraZeneca 1,623, Pfizer 837, Janssen 97). The remaining 94.9%, or 60,761 cases, were relatively mild symptoms such as muscle pain, headache, fever, chills, and nausea.

The authorities announce vaccination adverse reaction report statistics three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
