[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The members of the 5·18 Detained and Injured Association bowed their heads, vowing to undergo a complete transformation through change and reform.
On the 18th, the members of the 5·18 Detained and Injured Association issued a press release stating that they would accept the whip without excuses and commit to thorough self-reform.
They began by saying, “First, we express our solemn condolences to those who lost their lives in the Hakdong building collapse disaster and sincerely offer our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families who have been suddenly struck by this great shock.”
They continued, “We stand here with an indescribably devastated heart,” adding, “Whenever news of deviations related to May has been reported, we have felt like criminals unable to face our comrades who have passed on and the citizens.”
They then admitted, “For a long time, the 5·18 Detained and Injured Association accumulated many problems due to the prolonged shadow governance by a specific individual,” and “In reaction, the new executive body launched in December 2019 by the will of about 500 members also ultimately ended in a disastrous failure,” bowing their heads in apology.
They added, “Now, we will empty our minds, not cling to any vested interests, and devote ourselves solely to restoring the trust of citizens and comrades and healing wounds,” emphasizing, “We are confident that deciding all matters through fair and legal procedures based on the will of citizens and members, not by force or stubbornness, is the right path, and we will do our utmost to achieve this.”
Along with this, they asserted, “From now on, we will resolutely block the participation of individuals with criminal records in the May organizations’ executive bodies,” stating, “Only by expelling such individuals from the forefront of 5·18 can we take the first step to restore the fallen dignity of our May movement.”
Furthermore, they pledged, “To restore the honor and normalization of the May organizations, we will abandon all vested interests and do our best to ensure that a public law organization is promptly established and that a new leader with morality and capability can lead this public law organization.”
