Biden's European Trip Ends in Failure with No Gains... Diplomacy Yields Nothing
China Says Summit with US Not Urgent
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Chinese state media evaluated that U.S. President Joe Biden gained nothing from his European tour, describing the Group of Seven (G7) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summits, as well as the U.S.-Russia summit, as all failures.
In particular, it expressed displeasure at Biden's attempts to contain China, stating that a meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Biden is not urgent.
The Global Times reported on the 18th that the U.S. tried to create a rift in China-Russia relations during the summit with Russia but failed.
Jin Chanlong, a professor at Renmin University of China, said, "As expected, President Biden tried to cause discord in China-Russia relations, but it had no effect." He explained that the attempt to exploit Russia's difficult economic situation to drive a wedge between China and Russia was an approach that overlooked the nature of China-Russia relations.
Professor Jin added, "It is common sense between China and Russia that China's economic development is not a threat but an opportunity for Russia," and questioned, "Who makes things difficult for Russia, and who can help Russia with its economic difficulties?"
Regarding a summit between President Xi and President Biden, China stated that such a meeting is not urgent and suggested that President Biden lacks confidence in holding talks with China.
Lu Xiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, also criticized President Biden for underestimating China-Russia relations. He said, "While the U.S. is a country trying to sanction, contain, and isolate Russia, China is a country offering a helping hand to Russia," adding, "President Biden underestimated President Vladimir Putin."
The Global Times harshly criticized the outcomes of the G7 and NATO summits. Chui Hongjian, director of the European Studies Institute at the China Institute of International Studies, said, "The shadow of the Trump administration still lingers over Biden's diplomacy," and added, "Europe remains concerned about the U.S." He further noted, "Although the G7 and NATO took a tough stance on China, it did not reach the level the U.S. desired."
The Global Times downplayed President Biden's European tour but reported that U.S.-Russia tensions somewhat eased as a result of the summit. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued an official statement welcoming the consensus reached between Russia and the U.S. to engage in strategic stability talks.
