107.5% Increase Compared to Same Month Last Year
First Tally of Ioniq 5... 414 Units Sold
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors more than doubled their sales in Europe last month compared to the same month last year, reclaiming the fourth place in cumulative European sales for this year after two months.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on the 17th, Hyundai and Kia sold 88,171 units in Europe last month, an increase of 107.5% compared to the previous year. This figure surpasses the overall European market sales growth rate of 73.7%.
Hyundai sold 43,865 units, up 104.9% year-on-year. This growth was led by strong performances of sport utility vehicle (SUV) models such as the Tucson (14,468 units) and Kona (10,821 units), as well as the compact wagon i20 (5,678 units).
Kia also sold 44,306 units last month, marking a 110.2% increase compared to the same month last year. The growth was driven by the Ceed (10,814 units) and SUV models such as the Sportage (9,064 units) and Niro (7,321 units).
Environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), also showed growth. Kia’s Niro sold a total of 7,321 units combining HEV and EV models, while the Kona and Tucson sold 6,139 and 5,863 units respectively. EV models such as the Kona, Ioniq Electric, Ioniq 5, Soul, and Niro recorded sales of 8,746 units, a 126.4% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, the Ioniq 5, which was counted for the first time, sold 414 units in Europe last month.
As the sales growth rate exceeded the overall European market sales growth, market share also rose. Last month, Hyundai and Kia’s market share increased by 0.6 percentage points from the previous month and 1.3 percentage points year-on-year to 8.1%. Hyundai’s share rose by 0.6 percentage points year-on-year to 4.0%, and Kia’s increased by 0.7 percentage points to 4.1%. Consequently, Hyundai and Kia ranked fourth in the European sales rankings among complete vehicle groups last month, following Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, and Renault Group.
From January to May, Hyundai and Kia’s cumulative sales reached 388,711 units, a 37.3% increase compared to last year, securing fourth place in cumulative sales as well. Hyundai sold 188,185 units, up 35.0% year-on-year, and Kia sold 200,526 units, up 39.5%. The cumulative market share also increased by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year to 7.5%, with Hyundai at 3.6% and Kia at 3.9%.
