[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] It was revealed belatedly that a man in his 30s who smoked in the subway and assaulted a citizen who tried to stop him was caught by the police.

According to the police on the 17th, the Gangbuk Police Station in Seoul sent Mr. A to the prosecution on assault charges on the 7th of last month. Mr. A is suspected of smoking a cigarette with his mask down and spitting on the Line 4 subway train bound for Danggogae at around 6:30 p.m. on April 30, and after being led off by a passenger at Suyu Station, assaulting another citizen.

The incident became known after a video was uploaded on YouTube on the 5th of this month. In the video, Mr. A was blowing cigarette smoke while facing away from the train door, and when a passenger tried to take it away, he tried to take out a new cigarette to smoke again but was stopped.

The Seoul Metro Corporation reported that station staff and subway security officers who received the report dispatched and handed Mr. A over as a suspect caught in the act of assault, and that he was also stopped when trying to smoke on the platform.

The corporation stated that Mr. A is also suspected of violating the Railroad Safety Act (smoking inside the train car) and the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act, and plans to request the relevant local government to impose a fine.
