[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] It has been revealed that Sung Kim, the U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, is currently coordinating his schedule for a visit to South Korea from the 19th to the 23rd.


An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on the 16th in response to reporters' inquiries, "The visit schedule is being coordinated."


The official said, "This visit is taking place in the context of promptly implementing the agreements made between President Moon Jae-in and President Biden during the Korea-U.S. summit," and added, "During Sung Kim's visit, Takehiro Funakoshi, Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is also scheduled to visit South Korea."


A meeting of senior officials responsible for North Korea policy from the three countries?South Korea, the U.S., and Japan?is also being discussed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said, "On that occasion, consultations among the senior representatives for North Korea issues from the Korea-U.S.-Japan and Korea-Japan groups are also being coordinated."


On the same day, Japan's Kyodo News reported that there are expectations that Sung Kim might seek contact with the North Korean side at Panmunjom during his visit. Regarding this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said, "Such a schedule is not being pursued."
