[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Esway announced on the 16th that its structural insulation panel ‘SY Polycam’ passed the fire safety test conducted by the Korea Construction Material Testing Institute and obtained the SIP semi-noncombustibility certification on the 10th.
The company explained that through this, the ‘Polycam House,’ which has already proven its seismic performance, now also meets fire safety standards this year. Polycam House is a modular home built using the panelizing method with SY Polycam.
SY Polycam recorded excellent results without any external deformation in three rounds of heat release tests. In two rounds of gas toxicity tests, it withstood more than 5 minutes beyond the passing time, delaying the release of harmful gases.
With the acquisition of the semi-noncombustibility certification, Polycam House based on SY Polycam has also secured fire safety. The company stated that this is in preparation for the amendment to the Building Act, scheduled to be enforced in December, which bans the use of combustible building materials entirely.
Polycam House previously demonstrated seismic safety against a magnitude 6.5 earthquake through the industry's first seismic performance evaluation in 2018. It was used as accommodation for about 3,000 members of the athlete support team during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and has been supplied as single-person dormitories for public institutions in the central inland region and as staff housing in Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam.
An Esway official emphasized, “Polycam House is an eco-friendly new-concept home that combines the advantages of traditional wooden houses with the benefits of modular homes, such as labor cost reduction and defect reduction through precise construction. Having already proven its seismic performance, it has now taken a step closer to the goal of being a safe house by establishing a foundation for fire resistance.”
He added, “SY Polycam is also planned to be used as material for ‘DIY Self-Nongmak’ through collaboration with architecture-focused YouTubers. Since DIY Self-Nongmak is part of the ‘Good Architecture Spread’ campaign, it was judged that convenient and safe materials like SY Polycam should be used to align with the event’s purpose.”
In March, Esway signed an MOU for content collaboration with the popular architecture YouTube channel ‘Direct Management Teacher Hong.’ The first content project selected after the agreement was to produce and release a video of a DIY Self-Nongmak that anyone can assemble using SY Polycam. SY Polycam requires no separate structure and can be assembled and disassembled with a single tool, offering excellent constructability, transportability, and insulation performance. It has also been supplied as modular materials for the construction of 300 isolation intensive care units for tuberculosis patients in North Korea.
