[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Apple has launched its premium podcast subscription service as initially announced. In Korea, popular economic YouTuber 'Sinsa Imdang,' who has 1.3 million subscribers, plans to operate personal programs.

On the 16th, Apple announced the launch of 'Apple Podcasts® Subscriptions,' a global marketplace for premium podcast subscriptions. Listeners in over 170 countries and regions can subscribe to individual programs or program groups through a single channel. By using the subscription service, users can select artists to listen to, remove ads, and access early previews of new content.

Listeners can explore subscription services and channels across various genres such as news, comedy, sports, and true crime. Apple collaborates with major media and entertainment companies like CNN, NPR, The Washington Post, Sony Music Entertainment, as well as independent creators to offer diverse programs.

Korean podcast programs include 'Nae Bujadeul,' hosted by six psychiatry residents, the public broadcaster 'TBS eFM,' popular economic influencer 'Sinsa Imdang,' and workplace-related content 'Heeren Channel.'

Oliver Schusser, Apple's Vice President of Apple Music and Beats, said, "Listeners want to continuously enjoy their favorite podcasts and easily support the creators who make this possible. Apple Podcasts Subscriptions will help creators grow their businesses and enable podcast broadcasting to become a primary source of information, entertainment, connection, and inspiration for millions of listeners worldwide."

Apple's announcement in April to introduce the subscription service is widely seen as an effort to counter Spotify, a competitor in the podcast market. Despite being a latecomer, Spotify has rapidly grown through its subscription podcast service. The U.S. IT specialist magazine TechCrunch noted, "As Apple's investment in the podcast market was delayed, rival companies were able to increase their podcast audiences."
