Hwasun-gun Conducts 'Smoking and Drinking Prevention Education' for Students

[Hwasun=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Ji-woon] Jeonnam Hwasun-gun (Governor Gu Chung-gon) announced on the 15th that it will conduct 'Smoking and Drinking Prevention Education' for elementary, middle, and high school students in the area until the end of September.

This education will be provided to about 2,500 students, alternating between face-to-face and non-face-to-face sessions according to the COVID-19 situation, and will be conducted as grade-specific participatory education and video education tailored to students' interests.

According to the 16th 2020 Youth Health Behavior Survey announced by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the average age at which youth first experience smoking is 13.6 years.

Since physical growth and development are not yet complete during adolescence, smoking and drinking during youth increase the probability of disease occurrence and greatly affect adult health. Therefore, early prevention education to block the entry into smoking and drinking during the growth period is important.

A health center official said, "We plan to continuously conduct smoking cessation and drinking prevention education targeting youth and local community residents," adding, "We will promote various programs for improving the health of residents, such as providing guidance on using smoking cessation clinics, creating a smoke-free environment atmosphere, and spreading a culture of abstaining from alcohol."
