[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Son Seon-hee] Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum evaluated President Moon Jae-in's attendance at the major 7 countries (G7) summit held in Cornwall, UK, as an invited country, saying, "As our national prestige has risen to the level of standing shoulder to shoulder with G7 countries, the expectations of the international community and our citizens regarding our role and responsibility have never been higher."
On the 15th, Prime Minister Kim presided over the Cabinet meeting at the Government Seoul Office and reflected on the significance of attending this G7 summit, stating, "It means that our country is showing remarkable achievements and momentum in responding to COVID-19 and climate change, along with the appearance of an advanced economic power."
He continued, "Our country actively participated in discussions on global issues such as health, climate change, environment, economy, and democracy at this meeting, and expressed proactive opinions on our contributions and roles," adding, "The network at the summit level with major countries has also become closer." He also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related ministries to implement follow-up measures related to the outcomes of this summit.
At the Cabinet meeting that day, the 'Progress and Future Plans for the 2030 Busan World Expo Bid' were discussed. Prime Minister Kim said, "In 2030, we intend to hold the World Expo under the theme 'The Great Transformation of the World, Voyage Toward a Better Future' in the Busan North Port area," adding, "We officially expressed our intention to bid at the International Bureau of Expositions General Assembly last December and plan to submit the bid application soon."
Prime Minister Kim expressed confidence, saying, "The bid for the Busan World Expo will announce South Korea's elevated status to the world, secure global leadership to lead the era of great transformation, and serve as a good opportunity for balanced national development," and added, "Next month, a private bidding committee will be launched for efficient bidding activities." He also said, "The government will promptly form a support committee to actively back the bidding activities," and requested, "We ask the public to show great interest and support for the successful bid of the Busan World Expo."
Meanwhile, regarding the 'Economic Census' being conducted since the previous day, Prime Minister Kim said, "It is an important national statistical survey targeting all businesses to understand the size and management status of enterprises," and urged, "We ask for the active cooperation of businesses and citizens."
