[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Postal delivery workers affiliated with the National Courier Workers' Union (Courier Union) under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Service Federation began a sit-in strike on the first-floor lobby of Post Tower in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 14th.
The Courier Union stated, "120 members of the Post Office Headquarters have started the occupation sit-in," and condemned the Korea Post Headquarters for "breaking social agreements and perpetrating a public deception."
At 1 p.m. on the same day, the Courier Union is expected to hold an emergency press conference at the protest site to denounce the Korea Post Headquarters regarding issues such as the deployment of sorting personnel and delivery workers. The union criticizes the Korea Post Headquarters for not honoring the promise made in the social agreement body to not shift sorting tasks onto individual workers.
They are also opposing the recent decision to deploy delivery workers as replacements due to the courier workers' strike, calling it an attempt to "weaken the union."
Postal delivery is divided among regular delivery workers employed by Korea Post Headquarters, non-regular delivery workers, and consigned couriers belonging to the Korea Post Logistics Support Team. Consigned couriers are classified as special employment workers who receive fees per delivery, similar to private courier drivers, and some of them, who are members of the Courier Union, are refusing to perform sorting tasks.
