"Mother Octopus Raising Baby Octopuses in the Hapyeong Bay Love Room (Spawning Ground)"
[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Hampyeong County is accelerating the ‘Octopus Spawning Habitat Creation Project’ aimed at increasing the stock of high-income species, octopus.
According to Hampyeong County on the 14th, the project officially entered the resource creation phase starting with the octopus transplantation work conducted on the 9th at the spawning ground of Seokdu Fishing Village in Hampyeong-eup.
Previously, the county completed the creation of octopus spawning grounds at five locations, including the mudflats of Seokdu and Jupo Fishing Villages in Hampyeong-eup, and Seokchang, Wolcheon, and Haksan Fishing Villages in Sonbul-myeon, with active participation from fishermen.
Accordingly, the county plans to release a total of 3,400 male and female octopuses, including 680 egg-bearing female and male octopuses initially released on the 9th, by June.
At this time, one male and one female octopus are paired in a tank for 2 to 3 days to mate, then transplanted to the spawning ground mudflats to induce natural reproduction, while the octopus’s food, the shore crab, is supplied regularly.
County Governor Lee Sang-ik said, “Octopus, rich in high-quality nutrients and popular as a national health food, is a representative specialty of Hampyeong. We will strive not only to restore resources through continuous octopus release but also to contribute to increasing fishermen’s income.”
