Creation of a Vacant Lot Garden in Seoul Forest Park
Garden Development with Flowers and Trees Planted Around Seoul Forest Lake Vacant Lot by the End of August
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 14th that by the end of August this year, it will transform the vacant land around the central lake of Seoul Forest into the ‘Starlight Garden’ with a sponsorship of 30 million KRW from trot singer Lim Young-woong’s fan club, ‘Youngwoong Era with hero (Youngwoong Era).’
Seoul City will create a walking path and benches overlooking the lake on the 500㎡ vacant land, refurbish the fountain, and plant various trees and flowers around the area to develop a new scenic space that citizens will want to visit.
Seoul Forest, formerly the Ttukseom Racecourse, was established on June 18, 2005, as an ecological area for flora and fauna with dense trees and a lake, as well as a green axis in the heart of Seoul, thanks to the funds and volunteer efforts of over 5,000 citizens.
Meanwhile, since starting with the ‘Myth Forest’ in 2012, Seoul City has been recognized as a successful case of citizen-led urban greening projects by creating forests and gardens in vacant spaces of parks and green areas through sponsorships from various stars’ fan clubs until 2020. The ‘Starlight Garden’ is the 59th project.
Choi Yoon-jong, Director of the Green City Bureau, said, “We are grateful for the voluntary sponsorship from ‘Youngwoong Era’ for promoting the urban greening project,” and added, “We plan to continue our efforts to create an eco-friendly Seoul and provide comfortable resting spaces for citizens.”
