[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 20s who threatened his girlfriend by saying he would distribute sex videos to her parents was sentenced to prison.
On the 12th, Judge Moon Jung-heum of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 13 announced that Jo Mo (24), who was indicted on charges of intimidation, was sentenced to 8 months in prison.
On February 1st last year, at around 9:48 a.m., Jo became angry after hearing from his girlfriend, the victim, that she wanted to break up, and said, "At least answer this, or I will really get angry and send the videos and everything we recorded together to your parents."
Later that day, at around 5:30 p.m., on a road in Guro-gu, Seoul, he threatened the victim by saying, "I will send the sex videos recorded while we were dating to your parents," and added, "If this matter becomes known and my father's business fails because of you, I will claim damages. Can your family handle that?"
Judge Moon stated, "Considering that the victim wants punishment and that the defendant repeated the crime during the probation period, a prison sentence is inevitable. However, favorable circumstances such as the defendant showing an attitude of admitting wrongdoing and the fact that the videos used as a means of intimidation were not distributed are taken into account."
The judge judged that the crime of threatening to distribute sex videos with the victim caused heavy guilt, and that the victim and her family suffered considerable mental distress.
In particular, Jo had previously committed the crime of special confinement causing injury and was sentenced to a suspended prison term, but it was confirmed that he committed this crime during the probation period.
