Government Expresses Regret and Protest Message Over Japan's Video Using 'Takeshima' Label

[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The government announced on the 11th that it protested against the Japanese Self-Defense Forces for recently labeling Dokdo as "Takeshima (竹島, the name Japan claims for Dokdo)" in a promotional video.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "We clearly conveyed our regret and protest to the Japanese side through diplomatic channels."

He explained, "Dokdo is clearly our inherent territory from historical, geographical, and international law perspectives," adding, "Our government intends to respond firmly to Japan's unjust claims regarding Dokdo, as we have repeatedly emphasized."

The video titled "Response toward Promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision," recently posted by the Japanese Ministry of Defense's Joint Staff Office (equivalent to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff) on Twitter and Facebook, included a scene showing a map of the Northeast Asia region with the phrase "Territorial Issue of Takeshima" marked in the Sea of Japan.

Previously, the government also protested through diplomatic channels when the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee depicted Dokdo as Japanese territory on a map.
