[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 11th that it will activate the ‘Central Building Accident Investigation Committee’ to clearly identify the cause of the collapse accident that occurred on the 9th at a building demolition site in Hakdong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, and to prepare measures to prevent similar accidents from recurring.


The investigation committee is composed of 10 experts from academia, industry, and research in various fields, including Professor Youngwook Lee from Gunsan University as the chairman, 4 experts in architectural construction, 4 in architectural structure, and 1 in law. The committee will operate for two months from today until August 8, conducting an investigation to identify the fundamental cause of the accident and preparing measures to prevent recurrence based on the findings.


At 11 a.m. today, the committee will hold a kickoff meeting at the Honam branch of the Korea Infrastructure Safety Corporation located in Gwangju to discuss necessary measures for the accident investigation.


The committee can be established to investigate the circumstances and causes of accidents involving human casualties, such as one or more deaths or missing persons, or five or more injuries, or accidents involving building collapses.


Um Jeonghee, Director of Building Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "We will comprehensively investigate issues that could have caused the accident from the building demolition permit process to the on-site construction process to identify the fundamental cause of the accident," adding, "Once the investigation is completed, all processes and results of the accident investigation will be transparently disclosed so that all citizens can understand and accept them."
