Dongwon Traditional General Market, Myeonmok Alley Market, Woorim Alley Market, Jungnang East Market, Sagajeong Market, Dongwon Traditional Market Shopping District and 6 local markets' products available for same-day delivery when ordered via 'Naver Neighborhood Market Shopping', 'Coupang Eats', 'Noljang', and 'Wemakeprice O' apps
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “A few days ago, I was surprised while looking at a delivery app. I found kimchi from the market I often visit. I was even more surprised when it arrived within 30 minutes of ordering.”
Yang (30), a resident of Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu, said this after experiencing traditional market online shopping for the first time and being amazed.
Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) announced that to expand sales channels for traditional markets, which have been stagnant due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide convenience to consumers, online shopping services are being offered at six traditional markets in the area.
‘Traditional Market Online Shopping’ is a service where fresh food items such as ingredients and side dishes sold at traditional markets can be purchased non-face-to-face and delivered to the home. The district started this service last year.
Currently, products from six local markets?Dongwon Traditional General Market, Myeonmok Alley Market, Woorim Alley Market, Jungnang East Market, Sagajeong Market, and Dongwon Traditional Market Shopping District?can be ordered.
The usage method is simple. Search for the desired traditional market on Naver’s ‘Neighborhood Market Shopping’ (Dongwon, Myeonmok, Woorim, East), ‘Coupang Eats’ (Sagajeong, Dongwon), ‘Nolleowayo Market’ (East), or ‘Wemakeprice O’ (East) apps, then place an order for home delivery.
The online shopping service is as convenient as existing online shopping. When ordering products from multiple stores within the same market, they can be delivered together. Delivery drivers visit each store to collect the ordered items and deliver them in one box.
There is no need to wait long for same-day delivery. For Naver’s ‘Neighborhood Market Shopping’ and ‘Noljang’, orders placed on weekdays are delivered within two hours, and on holidays, they can be received the next day. Coupang Eats and Wemakeprice O also deliver within a short time like food delivery.
When the service was introduced in August last year, online shopping sales amounted to only 2.65 million KRW, but as the number of users gradually increased, sales reached an impressive 50.23 million KRW in December. The district plans to continuously expand the traditional markets and affiliated stores participating in the service.
Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “This is an opportunity to purchase fresh products from traditional markets at reasonable prices, so I hope many people use it,” and added, “We will spare no support to ensure the stable establishment of the online shopping service and to strengthen the competitiveness of traditional markets.”
