Yeosu Rubber Factory Achieves 'P' Grade, the Highest Level in Process Safety Management
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] As the importance of the environment increases, each affiliate of Kumho Petrochemical Group is exploring various measures to establish a proactive environmental safety management system.
Kumho Petrochemical is making efforts to improve facilities for reducing air pollutants and to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Kumho Petrochemical Yeosu Rubber Plant achieved the highest grade, P grade, in the regular evaluation of Process Safety Management (PSM) conducted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor last year, recognizing its excellence in safety management. Kumho Petrochemical holds an "Integrated Safety and Environment Meeting" twice a year under the CEO's supervision, and since 2019, the meeting has been expanded to include environmental safety officers from all affiliates, not just Kumho Petrochemical.
The affiliates are also actively working to reduce carbon emissions and promote safety management. Kumho P&B Chemical is reviewing the introduction of facilities to reduce air pollutants. This year, they are replacing old heating facilities with new ones to reduce air pollutant emissions, and have formed a task force with external environmental experts to establish a systematic response strategy to environmental regulations through consulting. Additionally, under the slogan "The greatest value of our factory is safety," they operate the "Honorary Industrial Safety Supervisor Safety Keeper System," which continuously inspects and supervises workplace environmental hazards.
Kumho Mitsui Chemicals operates a safety personnel system during working hours and large-scale maintenance work at the workplace, and in 2019, it was recognized for efficient energy use within the plant by receiving the Excellent Workplace Certification from the Korea Energy Agency. Furthermore, Kumho Polychem holds monthly Environmental Safety Council meetings for resident partner companies to regularly share safety rules, and assigns environmental safety team members as representatives for each company to periodically assess work risks.
