Bicycle Rack with Improved Design Completed

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) has completed the maintenance of 672 bicycle racks at 21 locations this month and has officially started welcoming bicycle users.

In response to the growing demand for bicycles as a “contactless transportation mode” in the COVID-19 era, the district has significantly expanded bicycle racks. Approximately 450 new and replaced bicycle racks were installed around Seongsu Station to Ttukseom Station, where bicycle usage is high. Additionally, the old roofed bicycle racks under the station overpass were replaced with open-type racks to enhance user convenience.

The replaced open-type bicycle racks feature excellent durability and a sleek design with high visibility, allowing bicycles to be stored in a minimal area, harmonizing with nearby roads and trees to create a sophisticated urban landscape.

Accordingly, the district actively introduced racks that accommodate one bicycle per rack, which have high satisfaction in design and usability, replacing the existing racks that encouraged multiple or irregular bicycle placements. About 200 bicycle racks around multi-use facilities such as Seongdong-gu Community Sports Center and subway stations were extensively maintained.

In particular, bicycle racks were maintained mainly in areas with high foot traffic such as Wangsimni Station Plaza and Majang Livestock Market, enabling convenient short-distance travel between public transportation and bicycles.

Furthermore, in cooperation with the Seoul Seongdong Regional Self-Support Center, 1,467 abandoned bicycles obstructing passage were targeted, and 549 bicycles whose owners did not voluntarily move them were collected. Since October 2017, all residents registered in Seongdong-gu have been automatically enrolled in bicycle insurance, supporting bicycle accidents, aftereffects, injury consolation payments, and more, ensuring safe bicycle use for residents.

In the second half of this year, the district plans to continuously maintain bicycle racks, focusing on areas with high bicycle demand such as Hanyang University Station, to create a safe and pleasant street environment.
