[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] No Hyung-wook, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, announced that an emergency safety inspection will be conducted at demolition sites nationwide.
On the 10th, Minister No visited the site of the demolition building accident in Hak-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, where 17 casualties occurred, received a report on the accident response status and action plans, and stated, "Starting today, we will conduct emergency safety inspections jointly with local governments at all demolition sites nationwide."
First, he said, "I pray for the souls of the deceased, wish a speedy recovery to the injured, and extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims." He emphasized, "We will thoroughly review and do our best to implement measures to support the victims and their families."
Minister No also stated, "We will form a Central Building Accident Investigation Committee to thoroughly identify the cause of this accident and take strict action if any illegalities such as negligence in management responsibility are found." He added, "For demolition sites where accidents frequently occur, we will select sites vulnerable to safety risks, such as high-rise buildings and those adjacent to roads, where significant damage is expected in case of an accident, and conduct thorough inspections together with local governments and the Korea Infrastructure Safety Corporation."
He further said, "We will review whether the roles of construction entities such as ordering, design, construction, and supervision, as well as those of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Safety Corporation, and local governments, are functioning properly to ensure construction safety compliance, and carefully check for any deficiencies in laws and systems."
Finally, Minister No emphasized, "The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and related ministries will cooperate to promptly inspect vulnerable demolition sites and prepare fundamental measures to prevent recurrence, doing our best to quickly alleviate public anxiety."
