Damyang-gun Designates Dementia-Friendly Safe Community as 'Dementia Safe Village'

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Chunsu] Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do recently designated Sadong Village in Changpyeong 2-gu, Changpyeong-myeon as a Dementia Safe Village and held a plaque ceremony, the county announced on the 10th.

The plaque ceremony was held with the attendance of the Dementia Safe Village Operation Committee members and local resident representatives, strictly following fever checks and COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

On the same day, an introduction to the Dementia Safe Village and dementia prevention rules through dementia prevention education were also provided.

The Dementia Safe Village project aims for local residents to correctly understand dementia, prevent isolation of dementia patients and their families, and support dementia patients who need protection within the village.

Through this project, the Dementia Safe Village in Changpyeong 2-gu will operate dementia awareness improvement campaigns, and provide direct dementia prevention education, early dementia screening, and cognitive enhancement classes conducted by professional staff (nurses, occupational therapists, etc.) from the Dementia Safety Center and dementia prevention managers.

Kim Sunbok, director of the Dementia Safety Center, said, “Through the establishment of Dementia Safe Villages, we will help residents develop understanding and consideration for dementia patients and their families,” adding, “We will strive to build a dementia-friendly community environment so that dementia patients and their families can live safely and comfortably in the village that holds their precious memories.”

Meanwhile, Damyang-gun designated Seokhyeon Village in Geumseong-myeon as a Dementia Safe Village in 2019, and last year designated Deokchon Village in Goseo-myeon, operating various dementia prevention programs.
