From the 14th, Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Vehicle Modifications Including Panspring Alterations

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 9th that, together with the National Police Agency, 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, it will conduct a comprehensive crackdown on illegal vehicles, including illegally tuned cargo trucks, for one month starting from the 14th.

This year, special focus will be placed on cracking down on illegal vehicle tuning such as the installation of leaf springs on cargo truck beds, intentional damage or concealment of license plates due to the increase in delivery motorcycles, and non-compliance with safety standards for passenger vans used to transport children.

Last year, through the comprehensive crackdown on illegal vehicles, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport detected a total of 250,017 illegal vehicles and completed actions such as filing charges, imposing fines, and confiscating license plates. The number of illegal vehicles detected last year decreased by 19.1% compared to the previous year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the surge in demand for food delivery, the number of motorcycles cracked down on increased by 24.7% to 11,938 compared to the previous year.

Looking at the main crackdown results, license plate confiscations due to violations of vehicle-related laws such as tax delinquency, failure to undergo inspection, and uninsured vehicles were the highest at 106,980 cases. This was followed by crackdowns on abandoned vehicles (53,003 cases), illegal tuning (34,668 cases), safety standard violations (29,719 cases), illegally operated motorcycles such as unregistered vehicles (11,938 cases), unregistered vehicles (7,289 cases), and illegally registered vehicles (6,420 cases).

Kim Eun-jung, Director of the Vehicle Operation and Insurance Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "We plan to continue implementing strong crackdowns in cooperation with related agencies and promote institutional improvements to eradicate the operation of illegal vehicles."
