Dongdaemun-gu's 'Large Waste Smart Disposal' Selected as a Resident Life Innovation Case by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) has been honored by being selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s “2021 Resident Life Innovation Case Expansion Support Project” for its “Large Waste Smart Discharge Management Operation System Establishment” project.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected 33 preliminary cases for expansion out of a total of 468 excellent regional innovation cases discovered last year. Through online evaluations using “Gwanghwamun 1st Street” and “People’s Idea Box,” as well as on-site verification involving private experts and local residents, Dongdaemun-gu’s “Large Waste Smart Discharge Management Operation System Establishment” project was finally chosen as an outstanding case.

The “Resident Life Innovation Case Expansion Support Project” selects excellent cases and achievements of local governments discovered through various evaluations and competitions last year, and actively supports local governments that wish to adopt these cases so that they can be expanded nationwide.

The “Large Waste Smart Discharge Management Operation System Establishment” project is an innovative service that allows anyone to report large waste discharge anytime and anywhere via mobile without attaching a notification sticker. It was created to eliminate the inconvenience of residents having to visit their local community service center or use an internet site to report when disposing of large waste.

With the introduction of this system, residents can easily check the processing progress from waste discharge reporting via QR code to collection completion through notification messages on their mobile devices.

Additionally, by using the waste map to check uncollected periods, large waste that had been left unattended for a long time can be quickly processed.

You Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “I hope that the ‘Large Waste Smart Discharge Management Operation System,’ established to resolve residents’ inconveniences during the COVID-19 era, will be adopted by many local governments and contribute to improving the convenience of local residents’ lives. We will continue to discover various policies that can enhance financial efficiency and soundness.”
