Creating Community Gardens and Lively Forests for a Pleasant Environment
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Song Gwi-geun) announced on the 7th that it will create a multifunctional complex rest area for Jeju Island tourists and local residents on idle land near Nokdong New Port Passenger Terminal.
On approximately 7,000㎡ of the back area of Nokdong New Port Passenger Terminal in Doyang-eup, a total of 900 million KRW will be invested in the ‘Life-closely Forest Outdoor Garden Creation Project’ implemented by the Korea Arboretum Management Institute, a public institution under the Korea Forest Service, and the ‘Community Garden Creation Project’ implemented by the county, with plans to complete it by the end of this year.
The ‘Life-closely Forest Creation Project,’ selected last year as a Green New Deal project, is a project to expand green spaces for residents by creating various living gardens and themed gardens centered around multi-use facilities in residential areas.
With the theme of ‘Garden Embracing the Sea,’ a space overlooking the surroundings such as Sorokdo, Geogeum Bridge, and Geogeumdo will be created, along with a rest area open to residents, providing a pleasant environment for tourists using the passenger terminal and county residents.
Additionally, to restore the community spirit of local residents, the ‘Community Garden Creation Project,’ which is cultivated and enjoyed together, plans to provide diverse enjoyment to county residents by creating a plaza shaped like a ship and sail, themed zones of seasonal tree species such as hydrangea and camellia, and various themed walking paths under the theme of ‘Sea Flower Road.’
A county official said, “As residents are recently seeking green spaces such as gardens due to COVID-19, we will reflect residents’ opinions and do our best to create an efficient life-closely forest that directly helps the lives of residents.”
