[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union (KPTU) announced the launch of the Coupang Logistics Center Labor Union on the 7th.
On this day, the KPTU held a launch press conference in front of Coupang headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul, stating, "The KPTU National Logistics Center Branch Coupang Logistics Center Chapter was established the day before."
They added, "In Coupang, nine workers have died from industrial accidents over the past year, and workers affected by the COVID-19 cluster infection at the Bucheon Fresh Center are still fighting," and "Even now, workers are getting injured or collapsing every month, and repeated COVID-19-related center closures are occurring."
Furthermore, they emphasized, "We aim to create a healthy and safe workplace where workers' human rights are respected even if they work just one day, and where workers do not die while working." The Coupang Logistics Center union demanded that Coupang provide 20 minutes of paid break time every two hours and eradicate unfair labor practices and harassment within the logistics center. They also called for standardizing the base pay, which varies by center, and introducing a 'living wage' to stabilize workers' livelihoods.
