[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The number of applicants for the undergraduate international admission at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) is rapidly increasing.
GIST announced on the 7th that the undergraduate international admission for the fall semester of the 2021 academic year recorded a high competition rate of about 20 to 1.
GIST, which established the undergraduate international admission for the fall semester of the 2020 academic year, saw the number of applicants surge to about 300 within one year. Including applicants from European regions such as Germany and the United Kingdom, the applicants' countries of origin have diversified to 49 countries.
Accordingly, GIST increased the selection quota for the undergraduate international admission to about 15 students to attract outstanding international students. In addition to the existing document and interview evaluations, GIST also conducted a separate English proficiency test, exploring various methods to select talented and capable students.
The surge in applicants for the undergraduate international admission is analyzed to be mainly due to GIST's excellent research capabilities proven through global university rankings, increased recognition of GIST, and the provision of diverse information about GIST through international study abroad fairs and Zoom admission briefings.
The undergraduate international freshmen for the 2021 academic year will start living at GIST from this fall semester. The GIST campus plans to operate various exchange programs so that international freshmen can communicate with other GIST members and participate in diverse activities, supporting everyone to grow as global convergence leaders.
