Jeju Tamna Offshore Wind Power Complex (30MW scale)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will supply equipment to the largest offshore wind farm in South Korea.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction announced on the 7th that it has signed a contract to supply equipment for the 100MW-scale Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Farm with Korea Electric Power Technology.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction was selected as the preferred negotiator in 2019 through a competitive bidding process that comprehensively evaluated technology and price. With this contract, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction plans to supply 18 units of 5.56MW offshore wind turbines. The contract amount is approximately 190 billion KRW, and a long-term maintenance contract for the wind turbines will be signed separately after completion.
The Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Farm project will be established offshore near Hallim Port in the northwest of Jeju City. The project owners consist of Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind, which includes Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Midland Power, Hyundai Construction, and Korea Electric Power Technology. Design, procurement, and construction (EPC) will be jointly carried out by Hyundai Construction, Korea Electric Power Technology, and Korea Energy Engineering & Construction, while Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will supply wind turbine manufacturing, delivery, and maintenance services. The overall completion is scheduled for April 2024.
The 5.56MW offshore wind turbines supplied by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction are large-scale products with blades measuring 68 meters in length. They are designed to withstand strong typhoons with wind speeds up to 70 m/s. In fact, a prototype installed in Gimnyeong, Jeju, operated normally during Typhoon Chiba in 2016, which recorded a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 56.5 m/s. The 5.56MW offshore model received international type certification from UL, an international certification body, in 2019.
Park Inwon, Vice President of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction EPC BG, said, "It is especially meaningful to participate in the Jeju Hallim Offshore Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm project following the government's Renewable Energy 3020 policy announcement and the largest scale project in South Korea. We will do our best until completion to set a precedent that proves the competitiveness of South Korea's offshore wind industry and also strive to revitalize the domestic wind power industry ecosystem."
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is preparing for an increase in domestic offshore wind orders by completing its second wind power factory at its Changwon headquarters earlier this year and expanding its workforce. The company currently has 3MW and 5.5MW offshore wind turbine models and plans to commercialize an 8MW model in 2022. The localization rate of parts, which was about 30% at the beginning of the project, has recently been raised to over 70%. Currently, it is cooperating with more than 400 major domestic wind power companies.
