[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Bo-ryeong] Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, mentioned the possibility of a pardon or parole for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
In an interview with Yonhap News on the 6th, Leader Song stated regarding the issue of Vice Chairman Lee's pardon, "It does not necessarily have to be limited to a pardon; it can also be resolved through parole."
Leader Song said, "The important point is that Vice Chairman Lee is currently detained and unable to carry out activities, and the question is whether investment can happen unless he is released," adding, "There is growing public consensus that Vice Chairman Lee should be released to work on semiconductors, vaccines, and other disaster situations, and I understand that the Blue House is deeply considering this."
He continued, "I understand the Blue House's position on this."
Regarding the issue of nationwide disaster relief payments, Leader Song explained, "The Loss Compensation Act currently under discussion in the National Assembly alone cannot cover the damages, and if it is not combined with disaster relief payments, public dissatisfaction may increase," adding, "We need to consider it as a package."
He also commented on his remarks about the 'Yoon Seok-yeol file,' saying, "It was a fundamental statement that verification is necessary," and added, "I was shocked by former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol's remark about his mother-in-law's '10 won coin,' and since former Minister Cho Kuk was also displeased with the minister, wasn't he treated harshly like that? Anyone aspiring to be president should always have an attitude of explaining to the public."
