Directional Signs Previously Only by Rivers Now Installed in Urban Areas for Convenient and Safe Daily Environment
Additional Information Includes Destination Direction, Distance, Travel Time, and Restroom Facilities
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 7th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will promote the installation of ‘bicycle-only directional signboards’ in the city center in response to the increasing demand for bicycle use.
Currently, directional signboards are installed only near riversides, including Hangang Park. Seoul plans to expand the installation to the city center to create an environment where citizens who ride bicycles daily for commuting and other purposes can use bicycles conveniently and safely.
The information available on the directional signboards will also become more detailed and diverse. While the current signboards only show the direction and distance to the destination, the newly installed signboards will include various information such as the time required to reach the destination and nearby rest facilities like restrooms.
Seoul will select the new ‘bicycle-only directional signboard’ design through a citizen preference vote. To enhance visibility, three color design proposals have been prepared using the existing signboard color (blue), the color of Ddareungi (green), and the bicycle road color (dark red).
The voting will be open to anyone on Seoul’s M-Voting platform from the 7th to the 14th. Participants can freely provide various opinions through comments. Based on the voting results, the final design will be decided in June, followed by selecting locations and promoting installation.
Baek Ho, Director of Urban Transportation at Seoul City, said, “As bicycles have become an important means of daily transportation for citizens in the COVID-19 era, we will continue to build an environment where citizens can ride bicycles more comfortably and safely. We ask for active participation in the citizen vote to select the preferred bicycle directional signboard for Seoul citizens.”
