[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon Port is transforming into a smart port through new technologies of the 4th industrial revolution such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Incheon Port Authority announced on the 4th that it is applying 4th industrial revolution technologies in various ways across port facilities including piers and coastal passenger terminals.

In April, the authority introduced the country's first 'Smart Air Shower' at Incheon Port's coastal passenger terminal, which blocks and removes fine dust and harmful substances using IoT sensors.

The Smart Air Shower is a gate-type device similar to airport security checkpoints; it detects human movement with IoT sensors and sprays air to remove fine dust attached to the body and clothes.

Additionally, the device sterilizes and deodorizes the air and blocks viruses through an eco-friendly LED sterilizer and natural phytoncide gel on its sides. Using IoT technology, it analyzes indoor air quality 24 hours a day and provides information on issues and improvement measures.

Along with this, the authority is piloting and operating a 'Smart Safety Management System' that integrates IoT sensors and AI video analysis technology to thoroughly manage the coastal passenger terminal's pier facilities and respond swiftly to disaster accidents.

This system detects the location information of humans and objects via CCTV and transmits AI video analysis data to the integrated control room, enabling real-time monitoring of pier facilities.

In particular, in the event of disasters such as user falls, maritime falls, or ship fires, automatic detection and alarm notifications occur within 10 seconds, securing the golden time for safety accident response.

The authority plans to enhance the smart safety management system next year by adding new technologies such as digital twins (virtual representations of machines, equipment, or objects in the real world within a computer) and gradually apply it to a total of 26 pier facilities throughout Incheon Port.

Smartization continues in port air quality management by integrating virtual and augmented reality, drones, and big data.

With approximately 800 million KRW in government funding, from August 2019 to March this year, a joint research project on 'Demonstration and Planning of an Integrated Air Environment Management-Based Smart Port Business Model' was conducted under the supervision of Ecocean Co., Ltd., with DKI Technology Co., Ltd. and Smarty Co., Ltd. participating. Air quality measurement for demonstration was carried out at Incheon Inner Port, which has diverse cargo handling methods and is located near residential areas, using IoT and drones.

Smart air quality IoT devices were installed at six land zones within the inner port to measure as close as possible to pollution emission sources, and drone-based measurement and collection in maritime zones were conducted simultaneously to establish a system capable of real-time air quality data collection.

The big data-based air quality information measured through this was developed into a platform utilizing augmented reality (AR) technology and was demonstrated to be conveniently provided to port workers.

An official from Incheon Port Authority stated, "By utilizing 4th industrial revolution technologies such as IoT, AI, AR, and drones, we are not only creating a safer and cleaner Incheon Port but also generating various business models. We will continue to expand the integration of 4th industrial technologies into port facilities and strive to establish a smart port."
