[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Maeil Dairies is launching an eco-friendly cooler bag and holding a related promotional event on June 5th in celebration of Environment Day.
Environment Day was established following the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, where the international community pledged joint efforts to protect the global environment. In South Korea, June 5th has been designated as the legal Environment Day since 1996.
Maeil Dairies recently introduced the eco-friendly cooler bag "Somail Bag," made using the eco-friendly new material Tyvek. Tyvek is a non-toxic, eco-friendly new material that does not release harmful substances even when buried in the ground and contains no environmental hormones.
At the eco-friendly promotional event held on Maeil Dairies' Naver Brand Store, special packages combining Maeil Dairies' representative products with the eco-friendly cooler bag are being sold. The target products include seven items: Maeil Soymilk, Sunup, Barista Rules, Yomiyomi, Maeil Sterilized Milk, Hershey's Chocolate Drink, and Selex Core Protein. The cooler bag can also be purchased separately. This promotional event will continue until the prepared stock of cooler bags is sold out.
Maeil Dairies also distributed eco-friendly shopping bags to its employees to raise awareness about environmental issues. As a company engaged in the manufacturing and sales of food products that require daily purchase and use, it signifies the commitment of all employees to take the lead.
In response to social concerns over environmental issues such as rising temperatures and ecosystem destruction in recent years, Maeil Dairies has been promptly releasing environmentally considerate products. Starting in 2020 with the removal of straws from the fermented drink "Enyo100," this year they consecutively launched "Sangha Farm Organic Sterilized Milk" and "Maeil Milk Straw Removed" without straws.
Recently released Sangha Farm frozen ice cream and two types of frozen juice also use paper packaging. The "Slow Milk," which previously used PET containers, has switched to paper-based Fresh Pack packaging, and packaging for Maeil Milk 2.3L and Sangha Farm Organic Milk has been lightened to reduce plastic usage. For cup-type products such as RTD cup coffee Barista Rules, aluminum labels have been removed to facilitate recycling.
Through various efforts such as straw removal and the use of paper packaging, Maeil Dairies estimates it will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,287 tons. This effect is equivalent to planting about 195,348 30-year-old pine trees.
