Mando-Smart Radar System, Agreement for Joint Development of 4D Image Radar

Mando-Smart Radar System, Agreement for Joint Development of 4D Image Radar

[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Mando announced on the 4th that it signed a 'Ultra High Resolution (UHR) 4D Imaging Radar Joint Development Agreement' with Smart Radar System (SRS) on the 2nd. According to this agreement, the two companies plan to converge and integrate radar technology know-how to jointly develop a world-class ultra high resolution 4D imaging radar product by 2023.

Mando previously succeeded in domestic localization of adaptive cruise control (ACC) long-range radar for the first time in Korea in 2014, and currently has a 3rd generation radar lineup corresponding to autonomous driving level 3, including automatic emergency braking (AEB) mid-range radar.

The 4D imaging radar is at the forefront of 4th generation radar development, and according to the company, Mando's 4th generation radar is highly likely to become a sensing solution for fully autonomous driving, surpassing autonomous driving level 4.

The 4D imaging radar jointly developed by the two companies is designed with 768 channels, offering about four times higher resolution compared to global competitors. The 4D imaging radar uses deep learning on point cloud-based spatial images in four dimensions to recognize objects more accurately than existing radars.

Kang Hyung-jin, Head of Mando ADAS BU R&D Center, said, "As the application areas of vehicle radars expand, Mando is simultaneously developing various radars such as indoor human detection sensors," adding, "This open collaboration with SRS is expected to be a groundbreaking turning point not only for radar development for autonomous driving but also for expanding business areas such as robotics."
