Gangnam Plastic Surgery Clinic Hit by Ransomware Attack, Customer Information Leaked... Police Launch Investigation

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, experienced a ransomware attack that led to the leakage of customer personal information, prompting the police to launch an investigation.


On the 3rd, according to the police, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency recently began an investigation related to the attack on the hospital's server.


The hospital stated on its website notice, "On May 22, 2021, our server was infected by ransomware from a professional hacker," adding, "After detecting abnormal access, we immediately blocked external network connections and took protective measures while notifying the police and requesting an investigation."


It continued, "During the ongoing investigation, it was confirmed that on June 2, the hacker directly contacted some customers using their contact information via text messages and emails," and explained, "Due to the limited situation where our server cannot operate, we are unable to accurately verify the items of leaked personal information, the timing, and the circumstances of the leak." Additionally, it added, "We are currently verifying through the police and a professional investigation agency and are also proceeding with reports to related government agencies."
