[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] The legal team of former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol stated that they do not wish to punish former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, who was accused of defaming former Prosecutor General Yoon. Although Cho is subject to punishment, they judged that it is not appropriate to respond to every political statement.

On the 3rd, Yoon’s lawyer said in a statement, "At this point, we have consistently argued that the complete abolition of direct prosecution by the prosecution is undesirable as it weakens the nation’s overall anti-corruption capabilities," adding, "Yoon opposed the 'Prosecution Reform' at the risk of his position as Prosecutor General."

Regarding former Minister Cho, they explained, "Cho intentionally distorted and publicized Yoon’s remarks," and "we believe this constitutes a criminal offense under the law."

However, as a former Prosecutor General, Yoon’s side believes it is not appropriate to respond to every statement made by Cho. In particular, the lawyer stated, "Since Yoon’s remarks on the prosecution reform have been publicly disclosed through various media outlets, we also considered that it has been proven that Cho’s statements are false."

Earlier, in February, former Minister Cho criticized former Prosecutor General Yoon on social media for allegedly reversing his stance on the separation of investigation and prosecution during the parliamentary confirmation hearing, calling it "very desirable," but was reported by a civic group. This case was closed without prosecution the day before after Yoon submitted a letter expressing no desire for punishment.
