[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongnam, experienced the complete loss of the Gunmin Sports Park soccer field due to flood damage caused by heavy rains and increased dam discharge amid difficulties from the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

The county announced on the 3rd that it has invested a total project cost of 5.7 billion KRW, including 4.5 billion KRW in national funds, to restore the damaged Gunmin Sports Park. After completing administrative procedures such as river occupancy permits, the main construction began in March, achieving a 60% progress rate, with the goal of completion by the end of June. The county will devote full efforts to the construction until completion.

Additionally, the soccer field at Gunmin Sports Park is a dedicated field made with artificial turf and is used very frequently, hosting numerous tournaments and training sessions every year. Therefore, it has been designed to improve drainage functions such as outer drainage channels and drainage plates.

Through consultations with soccer experts including the Korea Football Association, and by conducting quality tests and on-site verifications, the county is carefully reviewing and installing facilities to create a high-quality soccer field.

The county is also working to promptly complete repairs and reinforcements within this year for facilities damaged by flood damage such as walking trails, parking lots, and grass plazas, aiming to return a pleasant and vibrant sports park to the residents.

Moon Jun-hee, the mayor of Hapcheon-gun, stated, “Since the Autumn National High School Soccer Tournament is scheduled for July this year, we will strive to provide a soccer field that is much more upgraded than before. We will enhance the brand value as a mecca of soccer tournaments and restore the sports park to the residents who are going through difficult times.”
