[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 3rd that Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong met with John Aquilino, the new U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Commander visiting Korea, and exchanged wide-ranging views on ways to develop the Korea-U.S. alliance and regional security situations.
On the morning of the same day, Minister Chung held a breakfast meeting at the diplomatic residence with Commander Aquilino, Robert Rapson, Charg? d'Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Korea, and Robert Abrams, Commander of U.S. Forces Korea.
At the meeting, Minister Chung congratulated Commander Aquilino on his appointment as the Indo-Pacific Command Commander and requested that, as the commander overseeing U.S. Forces Korea, he continue to contribute to the development of the Korea-U.S. alliance, which is a key pillar of regional stability and prosperity, as well as to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
Minister Chung provided a detailed explanation of the outcomes of the Korea-U.S. summit held on the 21st of last month and urged active promotion of follow-up measures in the diplomatic and security fields. Commander Aquilino responded that he would closely cooperate in this regard.
Commander Aquilino stated, “As the new Indo-Pacific Command Commander, I will maintain a strong Korea-U.S. combined defense posture going forward,” and added, “I will actively support the diplomacy of both Korea and the United States.”
