Seocho-gu Exchanges Used Plastic Water Bottles for Glass Containers on World Environment Day (June 5)

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Eunhee Jo) is conducting the "Yongginae Campaign" (reducing the use of disposable products) with the resident recycling monitoring team to convey the value of resource recirculation in celebration of "World Environment Day" (June 5) in 2021.

The campaign, held on the 3rd, takes place in three local areas frequently visited by residents, including the community service centers and nearby apartment complexes. Residents can exchange five used water PET bottles for glass airtight containers suitable for home use. The collected water bottles are provided to local companies that recycle waste water bottles to produce products.

Additionally, the recycling monitoring team, consisting of about 20 residents, leads education and cultural initiatives on resource recirculation. They visit stores to discover and monitor "Resource Circulation Practice Stores," such as laundries for hangers and butcher shops or takeout restaurants for ice packs, continuing to promote resource recirculation. On the day of the campaign, the event will conclude with the discovery of "Seocho-gu Resource Circulation Practice Stores" and the attachment of mini plaques.

The goal is to discover 100 resource circulation practice stores, and a "Our Neighborhood Resource Circulation Practice Store Map" will be created to indicate locations, collection, and delivery methods, helping connect neighborhood stores and residents.

The created map will be available on the Seocho-gu Office website, community service center bulletin boards, nearby apartment complexes, and resident communities. Based on this, a "Resident-led Recycling Network" will be established.

Meanwhile, Seocho-gu is preparing policies to strengthen the resource recirculation system, including "High-Quality Resource Recovery of Transparent PET Bottles," which improves the entire process from production to recycling by providing high-quality transparent PET bottles; "Ice Pack Reuse," which collects, repackages, and supplies ice packs; and a "Household Waste Sorting System" that separates and processes waste synthetic resins by material type.

Seocho-gu Mayor Eunhee Jo expressed her aspiration, saying, "In the era of climate crisis, we will continuously discover resource circulation projects that residents can easily practice in daily life and firmly lay the foundation for a carbon-neutral city."
