Signed a Joint Agreement for an Eco-Friendly Campaign on World Environment Day
Promoting the Eco-Friendliness of Steel Including Support for Plastic Waste Collection Bins Made from POSCO Stainless Steel Materials
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] POSCO announced on the 3rd that it will promote an eco-friendly campaign by signing a business agreement with Emart, Korea P&G, and others in celebration of World Environment Day on June 5.
As part of corporate citizenship activities to promote the eco-friendliness of stainless steel products and reduce plastic waste, POSCO, together with Emart, Korea P&G, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, and TerraCycle, will conduct a plastic collection campaign.
This plastic collection campaign aims to practice resource circulation by gathering everyday plastic waste such as toothbrushes, shampoo bottles, and food containers and upcycling them (transforming recycled materials into products with added design or functionality to increase their value). Each participating company will hold a special exhibition titled "Bring Plastic, Protect Our Ocean" on June 5 to commemorate Environment Day and plans to expand the campaign with various events in the future.
The collected plastic waste from the campaign will be upcycled into useful products for daily life through collaboration with steel materials.
To increase participation in the campaign and spread awareness of the importance of upcycling, 5,000 stainless steel tumblers made from POSCO’s eco-friendly materials will be given as souvenirs to participants.
Meanwhile, POSCO plans to support the expansion of Emart’s plastic collection campaign currently operating in stores within the metropolitan area. First, to promote the eco-friendliness of steel materials, existing plastic collection bins that cannot be recycled will be replaced with POSCO stainless steel collection bins, and bins equipped with IoT functions that can monitor collection weight, timing, and participation volume will also be introduced.
POSCO, together with Emart, will also operate a "Plastic Free Food Court Zone" within Emart Traders stores, allowing the general public to directly experience and easily understand the eco-friendliness of steel materials.
Additionally, POSCO, Emart, and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation will produce a YouTube video to inform the general public about the importance of natural ecosystems and circulation, and conduct educational sessions at the Emart Culture Center.
