Utilizing the Empty Wonhyo Shopping Mall Rooftop... Drone Demonstration Inside 3m High Net, Track Created for Autonomous RC Car Testing
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] A new industry testbed where drone and autonomous driving technologies can be freely demonstrated and verified has been established on the rooftop of Wonhyo Shopping Center in Yongsan Electronics Market, Seoul.
On the 3rd, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it has completed and opened the 'Yongsan Y-Valley Drone and Autonomous Driving Testbed' on the 1,942㎡ rooftop of Wonhyo Shopping Center, which had been unused without any particular purpose.
Seoul is developing Yongsan Electronics Market into a new industry ecosystem that concentrates key technologies of the 4th industrial revolution such as drones, robots, AR·VR, as well as ICT and electronic manufacturing fields, and has newly opened a space for technology verification. Within Yongsan Electronics Market, coding education, practical training, technology verification, and sales can all be conducted in one place.
The 'Yongsan Y-Valley Drone and Autonomous Driving Testbed' allows drones to fly freely inside a 3-meter-high net enclosure. On the floor, there is a track for testing autonomous RC cars.
Startup companies within Yongsan Electronics Market and young people participating in educational programs can immediately practice after coding and assembly. Until now, except for indoor spaces, it was difficult to find places to fly drones, forcing users to go as far as the nearby Hangang Park, but this inconvenience is expected to be greatly reduced.
Next to the testbed, a rest and event space for visitors to Yongsan Electronics Market has also been created. Seoul plans to revitalize the commercial district by holding various events such as flea markets in cooperation with businesses inside the market.
Seoul will hold an opening ceremony for the 'Yongsan Y-Valley Drone and Autonomous Driving Testbed' on the 3rd. Various experience programs hosted by small business owners in Yongsan Electronics Market and a flea market featuring drone and autonomous driving sales companies will be held.
Yang Yong-taek, Acting Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Urban Regeneration Office, said, “By providing a testbed space for future industries such as the 4th industrial revolution within Yongsan Electronics Market, coding and assembly education, practical experience, testing, and sales can all be conducted in one place within the market.” He added, “We hope many citizens will use the testbed space so that Yongsan Electronics Market can lead future industries such as drones and autonomous vehicles and that the commercial district and local community can be revitalized.”
