Daewoo Shipbuilding Opens Scholarship Center for Employees' and Partners' Children

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on the 2nd that it has opened the DSME Dodream Scholarship Center for the children of its employees and in-house partner company employees.

The scholarship center was agreed upon by labor and management during last year's collective bargaining. The company stated that the program was designed to avoid entrance exam-focused education centered on Korean, Math, and English, and instead focuses on practical English conversation courses. It targets students from 5th grade in elementary school to 2nd grade in middle school who are children of company employees and in-house partner company employees with more than one year of service. A total of 160 students, divided into elementary and middle school classes, are selected by lottery to attend classes twice a week taught by native speakers and English experts. For students who are not selected in the lottery, online video English education is also provided.

“Dodream” means inspiring dreams through learning and was chosen through an employee contest. Park Doo-seon, head of the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard, said, "We will operate the scholarship center with excellent programs so that it can be a place where children’s dreams can unfold."
