[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] A female teacher in the United States who had an inappropriate relationship with a teenage male student is facing up to 12 years in prison.
According to foreign media including the Daily Mail on the 1st (local time), Abby Deeps (35), an English teacher at Portage High School in Wisconsin, was arrested by police on the 26th of last month on charges of sexually assaulting a male student A (17) whom she taught.
Deeps had sexual relations twice with student A at her home on the 21st and 22nd of last month. Another staff member who accidentally found out reported it to the police, and during the investigation, Deeps admitted to having a relationship with her student.
Deeps stated, "We connected physically and mentally," and "We talked about the feelings we had for each other and also discussed that there was a line we could not cross."
Student A also reportedly said, "We fell in love. There was no forced sexual activity," and "I am angry at the person who snitched on us."
Deeps, who was charged with two counts of sexual assault, was released on $3,500 (about 3.8 million KRW) bail under the conditions of 'no contact with student A' and 'no access to the school.' She was also notified of her dismissal by the school.
Local media predicted that if the full trial proceeds, Deeps could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.
