Major Achievement Cited as 'Securing Missile Sovereignty'
41.2% of People Power Party Supporters Say "No Achievements"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] Seven out of ten citizens responded that there were achievements in the recent South Korea-U.S. summit meeting.
On the 1st, Asia Economy conducted a survey on whether there were achievements in the South Korea-U.S. summit meeting with 1,045 voters aged 18 and over nationwide from the 29th to 30th of last month. As a result, 70.5% of respondents answered that there were achievements in the summit meeting.
Responses indicating that there were no clear achievements in this South Korea-U.S. summit meeting reached 23.9%. In particular, the highest rate was among supporters of the People Power Party (41.2%), and the lowest among supporters of the Democratic Party of Korea (3.2%). Those who answered "don't know" accounted for 5.6%.
Those who evaluated the president's state affairs performance negatively were more likely to respond that there were no clear achievements in the summit meeting (41.3%). Conversely, only 2.3% of those who positively evaluated the president's performance responded that there were no achievements in the summit meeting.
The most cited major achievement was "securing missile autonomy," with 20.5% of respondents selecting it. This was followed by "strengthening the South Korea-U.S. alliance" at 16.4%, "establishing a global vaccine partnership" at 15.4%, "pioneering new paths in advanced industries such as semiconductors and batteries" at 9.9%, "cooperation on the U.S. policy to check China" at 6.1%, and "forming a consensus on North Korea policy direction" at 2.3%.
Evaluations of major achievements varied by gender and age group. Male respondents were more positive about "securing missile autonomy" (26.0%), while female respondents were more positive about "establishing a global vaccine partnership" (19.4%). Those aged 60 and under cited "securing missile autonomy" as the main achievement, whereas those aged 70 and over rated "strengthening the South Korea-U.S. alliance" (35.5%) most positively.
Differences were also observed by political party support. Supporters of the Democratic Party (28.2%) rated "establishing a global vaccine partnership" most positively, while supporters of the People Power Party (16.3%) and the People Party (16.3%) rated "strengthening the South Korea-U.S. alliance" highest. Additionally, supporters of the Justice Party (26.4%), Open Democratic Party (35.0%), and non-affiliated voters (14.1%) cited "securing missile autonomy" as the main achievement, while supporters of other parties (19.4%) responded with "establishing a global vaccine partnership."
This survey was conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting targeting voters aged 18 and over nationwide from the 29th to 30th, with 1,045 respondents and an overall response rate of 10.4%. The survey method was 100% wireless ARS using virtual mobile phone numbers, and the sample was extracted with weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of January 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
